X Trench Run
X Trench Run is a free arcade flying game you play in your browser. You pilot a space fighter down a narrow trench, dodge the walls, shoot what gets in your way, and try to last as long as the game keeps speeding up.
The whole run is a race against your own reaction time. Points pile up the longer you survive, so a good score is more about endurance than aim. Then a boss shows up to end it.
What is X Trench Run?
It is an arcade survival shooter set inside a tight, scrolling trench. You fly forward automatically and steer to squeeze through gaps in the walls while the speed creeps up the whole time. Along the way you blast obstacles and enemy ships with your laser, grab power-ups, and brace for the boss fights that break up the run. There is no finish line. You play to beat your last score.
How to play
You only ever do two things: move and shoot. The difficulty comes from how little time you get to do them as the trench accelerates.
Desktop controls
- WASD or the arrow keys to move the fighter
- Space bar or left mouse button to fire your laser
Mobile controls
X Trench Run runs on phones and tablets, so you can fly and shoot using the on-screen touch controls in the browser.
Power-ups
Power-ups spawn inside the trench and are worth going out of your way for.
- Speed Down briefly slows everything, which buys you time to read the next obstacle. It is the most useful one to have on hand.
- Shield soaks up one hit, so a mistake that would normally kill you instead costs nothing.
- Wall Destroyer clears the obstacles ahead of you. It keeps you alive, but it can cost points, since you no longer earn the bonus for threading the gap yourself.
Enemies and bosses
Three things end most runs: clipping a wall or obstacle, taking an enemy laser, and losing a boss fight. Walls get you early. Later on, when the speed is high and your reactions are stretched thin, enemy fire becomes the bigger problem.
Regular enemy ships show up now and then and shoot as you pass. Their aim is sloppy, but at full speed even a stray shot is hard to dodge. Bosses arrive after you have been flying a while. They take several hits before they go down and fire in set patterns you have to read. Once you have seen a boss a couple of times, its attacks stop being a surprise and become something you can plan around.
Scoring
Points come in passively just for staying alive, and you add to them by slipping through narrow gaps and destroying objects with your laser. Because the trench never stops speeding up, every extra second is harder to earn than the one before it. That is what makes a high score mean something here. It is not a matter of waiting it out.
Tips for a higher score
- Sit near the middle of the trench by default. The center gives you room to react in either direction when an obstacle appears.
- Use Speed Down the moment a run starts feeling out of control instead of hoarding it for later.
- In boss fights, move in steady, small adjustments. The shots have enough spread that calm dodging beats jerking around.
- When in doubt, play to survive. A risky shot is rarely worth the position it puts you in.
What makes it hard
The trick is that the game only gets faster. A gap that felt easy in the first ten seconds becomes a split-second decision a minute in, and nothing about your controls changes to help. You are not learning new moves, you are learning to make the same two moves quicker. That steady ramp is what keeps pulling you back for one more run.
